Paragliding instruction has been available at Michelago since 1992. This makes Kosciusko Alpine Paragliding Club the oldest Paragliding Club in Australia and the Ryrie's Homestead the oldest training location in the country. It has been in continuous use since then.
MICHELAGO PARAGLIDING is situated in the Monaro Valley approximately 50 kilometres south of Canberra on a fully functioning sheep station. Michelago Paragliding is in a unique position where all training takes place on the property. This reduces the amount of time spent travelling to sites, which in turn allows us to spend more time on your tution.
Our primary goal is to teach our students how to fly safely and most importantly to enjoy whichever type of flying they choose to pursue: inland thermalling, coastal ridge soaring, record breaking or even competition challenge. We also encourage all pilots to participate in the vibrant social scene that exists in the free flying community. We strongly believe in human's desire to fly. Whether you are a 40 something office worker/home-maker who needs an after hours escape from work or child pressures or a competitive young person that wants to extend their personal boundaries, we will tailor a program for you to achieve your goal.
Paragliding is the most portable form of aviation today and if you're prepared to challenge yourself, it is suitable for you. Any man or woman with a moderate level of fitness, 16 - 60+ years young can take the challenge. Paragliding allows unparalleled flexibility and freedom which only birds could enjoy until recently. Just pop your Paraglider in the car or on your back and drive or walk to the take-off. Even overseas travel is easy with your paraglider!
To fly legally in Australia you must have a licence which is issued by the "Hang Gliding Federation of Australia". To attain the licence you are required to attend a school operated by a qualified instructor. The full-time course takes 8 to12 days depending on your aptitude. At the completion of the course you will be licenced as a "Restricted Paraglider Pilot". From that point, as a safety measure, you should fly with an experienced pilot until you gain your Intermediate and ultimately Advanced licence. Most clubs operate a "Buddy System" to satisfy this requirement so you can improve your skills steadily and safely in a supportive environment.
