CURRICULUM VITAE
Michalis Keffalas was born in Athens in 1966. Son of Petros Keffalas and Calliope Karamanlis, from Oinouses, Chios. At the age of 13 he composed his first song. During his adolescence, as a member of experimental music groups, he gave concerts both at school and elsewhere. In an environment of film clubs and theatrical workshops he met directors, authors, actors, he studied poetry and literature and, when he was about 17 years old, he composed music for amateur�s theatre and puppet theatre.
In 1981, he started classical guitar studies and from 1985 piano and music theory studies. He was awarded degrees in classroom singing, harmony, counterpoint and fugue as well as a diploma in composition under the supervision of Theodore Antoniou. He attended many seminars and lectures on contemporary notation and compositional techniques, film and stage music, computer music, choir and orchestra conducting, music education and Byzantine music.

Since 1991 he has worked as a music educator and in 1994 he established
the �Alypios� Music School in Korydallos, a school with serious local cultural activities. In 1996 he was appointed as a music teacher in primary schools. In 1999 he was awarded a diploma in music by the British Open University [Dip. Mus. (Open)] and he proceeded to postgraduate studies at York, United Kingdom, being on educational leave by the Greek Ministry of Education. In 2000, he was awarded a Master�s Degree in composition by the University of York [MA (York)] under the supervision of David Blake and in 2003, a Doctor�s of Philosophy Degree in composition by the Goldsmiths University of London [Ph.D. (London)] under the supervision of Roger Redgate.

He has been honored with a scholarship from �Panchiakon Foundation I. D. Pateras� and a grant from �Avra Shipmanagement S.A.� of N. Lemos. He has also won first prize in the competition �Young Composers of the Next Generation� in the Athens Concert Hall and second prize in his final examinations in composition. One of his works has been selected to be performed at the
"2nd �Alfeo Gigli� International Festival of Composition" in Bologna, Italy. He is member of the "Centre for Promotion of the Contemporary Composers" (CPCC).

He considers the work and personality of Manos Hadjidakis, Yianni Christou and Dimitri Lekkas to have exerted a decisive influence on his development. His work includes incidental music for theatrical plays, song cycles, music for children, chamber music, orchestral music and written studies on music. His research interests range from science fiction opera and music theatre to the structure of music education in Greece, problems of study and spread of Greek musical culture, as well as of the ethos and philosophy of music.
