| Concerto for Zurnas, small ensemble of Greek traditional instruments and Western symphony orchestra (work in progress) |

| I grew up listening to Byzantine and Greek traditional folksongs. Nevertheless, my basic music studies were upon the Western music. Therefore, I always try to search for and learn about the traditional music of my country, perhaps, as the only form of protest and the only possible resistance to the threat of deterioration and oblivion. Thus, this work represents my attempt to trace the course of Greek traditional music of the last two thousand and five hundred years (Ancient Greek and mainly Byzantine music and Folksong), as well as how it contradicts and interacts to the Western European musical culture. In addition to this basic concept, several other secondary ideas provide useful material to my music, such as: the transition from monophony to heterophony and from heterophony to polyphony. Certain forms of Greek traditional music, such as Byzantine Kontakion, Heperotico (from Epirus) Lamentation and Lullaby are or will be used in the course of the concerto. Furthermore, I am interested in exploring how a contemporary Byzantine idiom could be established. |
