ancient protein survives in eye lens

here is an ancient bacterial protein whose function in eukaryotes has been taken over by a different class of protein. So it should disappear from our genomes, right?  In this particular case, the protein found a new job in the vertebrate eye lens, presumably ensuring structural stability.
