| After a weekend of being oncall and dreaming that the snow had somehow survived 5 days of 60 degree weather I convinced Helten and Dana to join me in heading up to the top of Vesper. Well, the snow in Wirtz basin had melted down to ice and the gulley heading up to Headlee Pass had become unboardable do to ice and steps. So, to keep things interesting, we headed up the right approach gulley rather than the main one to the left. I would suggest that people may want to take this one if the main gulley is trampled out as it would make for a nice board or ski. The top of this gulley has some minor scrambling followed by about a 15 foot bushwack down to the main trail to Vesper's summit. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Upon returning from an icy week of snowboarding at Red Mountain I decided that it would be a good time to venture up to Vesper Peak to check out the most probably sub-par snow conditions the Cascades were experiencing this season. However, much to my surprise, it turned out that there was snow all the way down to the road on my chosen hike and there even ended up being 2 to 3 feet of "ice powder" all the way up to Headlee Pass. This annoyed me beyond belief as I could not believe that I chose to carry my cameras over my board on this solo day hike of mine. This led me to turn back out of disgust just before heading up the final 1000 foot slope of Vesper Peak. I did manage to take some nice photos on the way back down of Glacier Peak, or a tree growing out of the rocky cliffs, and of a tree juxtaposed against the walls on the other side of the canyon. |
