MonteCristo Bike and Silver Lake Hike
In November of 2004 after the first snowfall hit Alex, Tom and I decided to bike into MonteCristo and then hike into Silver Lake to see what the backcountry snow conditions were like.  However, at the trailhead we encountered a minor problem in that my bike had two flats and Tom's bike pump didn't work.  That meant that we had 2 bikes for 3 people.  The solution was to have Alex and I do some leap frog biking where one of us would bike ahead; leave the bike; then hike until the other had retrieved the bike; biked ahead and then repeated this process.  All went smooth until Alex left the bike off to the side of the road and in the shade appx 1/2 a mile from MonteCristo.  The net result of this was that Three of us ended up at the townsite with only 1 bike between us!

The
hike from the townsite was snowfree for the 1st half mile and it then gradulally increased until we hit the lake where we found about 2 feet of fresh snow.  This was a bit surprising and it did slow us down some as we made our snowshoeless way through it.

The hightlikes of the hike were ...
