Respond to the following in a brief essay. Do your best to connect the two main ideas in a coherent fashion.

First, what kind of mother is the narrator of Alice Walker's "Everyday Use"? What good things has she done and what bad things? How much of what her children do and become is a result of how she raised them and her example and how much is a matter of their own choice and personality?

Second, what do racial and cultural identity have to do with one's perception of role models? How do traditions shape how one perceives one's family members as role models?
