The beginnings of a pond: I recently got interested in ponding and was excited about building my own pond, then I decided an in-ground pond was a little too dangerous since I have a toddler and another one on the way. An above ground pond seemed a lot safer with kids. I started the search for a stock tank and, within just a day or two, had located and purchased a used, 8ft. diameter galvanized stock tank. The Redneck Goldfish Pond was born! To the right, you can see view of how the pond looks in my yard. |

At this point, I haven't added any fish yet, but I've got a number of plants started: 2 water lettuce, 2 water hyacinth, 1 hardy lily, a couple of small clusters of parrot feather and a little bit of anacharis. I plan on keeping the water about 18" deep, which works out to about 560 gallons. |

Here you can see some water lettuce and hyacinth. Below one of the water lettuce, you can also see the first inhabitant of my new pond. I caught this little red-eared slider on way to work in about May of 2001. I've kept him in a fish bowl on my desk at work since then, but during the weekend of June 15, 2002 he escaped his bowl. People at work were keeping an eye out for him for several days. Someone finally spotted him in a conference room on thursday and brought him back to me. He'd been on the loose for about 4 days, maybe longer, depending on exactly when he escaped over the weekend. I took him home and placed him in the pond that evening. When I first caught him, he was about 1 1/2" in diameter. Now he's about 2 3/4" in diameter. |

Here's another view of the turtle from directly above. !!UPDATE!! I kept the turtle in The Redneck Pond for about 5 days. I had planned on him feeding on the water lettuce and water hyacinth in my pond, but instead he developed a taste for the $15 water lily I had purchased from Lowe's. The turtle had to go! I released him in my dad's pond June 24, 2002. |
|
Finally added some fish June25, 2002. I bought 17 goldfish from a local bait shop for $3.40 (for all 17 fish). They let me hand pick the ones I wanted. I have several that are going to have pretty fan tails as they get bigger. |

Another shot of the fish in their new home. |
