Langley joins Clean the Bay Day efforts

The lst Civil Engineer Squadron environmental management flight is sponsoring Langley's participation in the 7th Annual Clean the Bay Day, Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Clean the Bay Day uses volunteers to clean up the beaches and shorelines along the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
"Each year tons of refuse, especially plastics, enter the marine environment. This debris is not only unsightly as it accumulates along our shorelines, but it is a life-threatening hazard to marine wild life," said Phyllis Duffy, environmental protection specialist for the environmental management flight.
Volunteers not only clean up the litter found along the shorelines but also quantify and document the types found on a standardized data card developed by the Center for Marine Conservation.
Base volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at either Eagle Park or Big Bethel Recreation Area Saturday. At these areas, volunteers will receive instructions, data cards, bags and gloves. Duffy recommends that volunteers wear sturdy shoes and says children must be supervised.
If you can't make it on Saturday, Duffy said there are other ways to help keep the Chesapeake Bay clean.
"Educate yourself and the people you know about the marine debris problem," she said. "Recycle the items that can be recycled. Above all, do not litter."
If you would like to volunteer or need more information on Clean the Bay Day, please call the Pollution Prevention Office at 764-7193 or 3987.
