The Dub Thieves

Officer Material

Overview/Requirements – In addition to the requirements listed on the Crew Ranks page an officer has to have a couple other skills and abilities.  You are responsible for your crew and ship.  You must have the time to commit to a pillage before you start.  You must understand how to run a pillage and handle crew matters at the same time.

Officer Duties – Read through this web site and familiarize yourself with how this crew is to be run and what your responsibilities are, hire on new crew members, train new crew members, run successful pillages, keep the ships stocked, and increase our crew fame.  If you start the pillage then you are responsible for the entire pillage including the divvy and the restocking.  If somebody else is running the pillage do not assume that you will be navigating or gunning.  Ask.  They might be taking it out to memorize a route and want to do all of the navigating themselves.

Training – Unless you go out with a fleet officer, senior officer or the captain, then your first two dozen times that you bnav should be with the navy.  It is way more cost effective to do it this way.  You will get both nav and bnav experience on a small ship and it won’t cost you any cannonballs or rum.

Vessel Information – Read the YYPEDIA to familiarize yourself with the different kinds of ships out there.  Right now our crew only has sloops, cutters, and war.  When you start out you really only need to concern yourself completely with the sloops since you should not be doing a pillage on anything else.

Most ships are locked so that the officers that don’t own them can’t sail them.  There are a couple of sloops that are not locked that may be used by any officer.  Just make sure that you restock them and have been trained before taking them out.

The big difference between the different ships are the number of pirates they can hold, the number of movements per turn during a battle, the size of the cannon balls and how many they can shoot per movement.

Duty Stations – When using a sloop start with one carp and then fill sails.  After the sails are filled place another at the bilge.  During a battle it is important to keep sails filled if at all possible but when you start to get damaged fill carp right away.  When you start to notice that you are taking on water then place people on bilge.  Always keep your eye on the damage and water meters.

For gunning, try to find the best person in your crew and have them fill the guns.  When they are filled they can go and do sailing.  Have them go back to guns once you start to fire them in a battle.

You need maps between islands if you are to travel there.  When you travel enough times between them and get decent scores on the nav puzzle then you will start to memorize the route and will not need the maps anymore.

Jobbers – If you are not filling the positions from The Dub Thieves then you will have to hire jobbers.  Make sure the box is checked on the vessel tab.  Before you get jobbers let the crew know that you are going out by using the crew chat.

Before Sailing – Check the hold and verify that you have enough cannon balls and rum.  Do not leave without checking this.  If you are going out for a long run you might have to spend some of your own poe to stock it for a longer voyage.

While at Sea – Keep hiring as needed, watch what your crew is working on and who is lazing about.  At each league point the duty roster comes up if you are in a puzzle.  Only at the league points can you change your heading.

Keep a piece of paper handy to write down names of who is naughty and who is nice to you can +/-1 them during the booty divvy.  /plank the lazers, spammers and the ones that are just too much trouble.  If a crew member or jobber are doing an excellent job then give them a +1 when divvying. Those that laze about or complain too much about things should get a -1.  If the crew was good during a fight but you were a bad bnaver then give your self a -1.

On the screen that you plot your course you can zoom in (the controls are on the upper right).  When you zoom in a couple of times you will notice other ships of different colors moving along the same path as you.  This is called the radar.  Look for ships that are green.  These are the only ones that you normally want to attack.  If one comes from a different direction or is moving slower than you then you can click on the change direction button.

Before engaging the other ship you can look at their rank.  If it says Imperial then they will be very tough, if it says Sailors then they will be easy.  There are several different rankings.  Go to the yypedia for a complete list.

Do not leave the ship while it is at sea.  If you must go then you must find another officer to take over for you.  If you accidentally get off you can go to the dock and get back on easily.  If the ship is abandoned at sea all booty and goods in the hold will be lost.  This can get a lot of people angry at you so don’t abandon it at sea.  Restocking a ship from scratch will cost a couple of thousand poe.

PVP – Before you engage you can also tell if they are brigands or barbarians.  If it doesn’t say either of those then you would be facing other players and not something spawned by the computer.  This is also known as player-vs-player (PvP) or player-vs-environment (bots).

You may be contacted by someone from our crew/flag asking you to not attack them and you should not have engaged them in the first place.

Our crew rank is by how well we do in PvP battles. If you lose or disengage then our ranking is adversely affected.

Sea Battles – Also known as bnav (battle navigating).  Don’t even think of taking one of our ships out until you have 20 or 30 trips with the navy.  Practice, practice, practice.  Learn how to use the wind and the whirlpools.  For more information click here.  If you want to learn about how to master whirlpools click here.  It is very useful.

After the Battle – Assess your damage and get the crew on it right away.  If you are moderately damaged or more you will need to fill all carp stations.  When they are filled start to put people on bilging.  After that put them on sails.  If the carp damage meter is half red bilging will have very little effect.  That is why you need to fill carpentry first.  Keep tabs on how much run and cannon balls are in the hold because you don’t want to run out.  Port if needed but only at a port that is inhabited.

Porting, Divvying, & Restocking – The only reason to port at an island that is not inhabited is to forage if you have the right badge or to memorize an islands location, otherwise port at an inhabited island.  Look over your notes to see if any -/+ 1s are needed.  Don’t abuse this in either direction.  Make sure that you have enough going into the restock pile.  After the divvy you need to restock the ship.  Always restock the ship.

Can’t emphasize this enough – always restock the ship.  Before you are tempted to pocket some poe and say that you didn’t get any you need to know that the ships records will show how much poe you received for stocking and how much you spent on restocking.

Verify that you have restocked up to the specified quantities or to at least what was in there before you took command.  Use all of the money divvied from the booty for restocking even if it is more than enough.  If you do not have enough poe from the divvy then it is your responsibility as the OIT to use your own money for restocking.  You may purchase rum and cannonballs ahead of time for restocking.  You may then remove poe from the hold to cover this expense after the divvy.  If you are having difficulty or if you have any questions about the restocking then please ask a higher ranking officer to help you.

Pillage Guide – For a basic sloop pillaging guide click here.

Flag – Try not to do a PvP with others in our flag unless both parties agree.  The flags fame is directly linked to the amount of puzzles played just like the crews fame.

Going out again – if the ship has any damage then this damage will stay with the ship when you go out again unless all pirates stay off the ship for 30 minutes.  At this time the ship will be completely fixed.

Flotillas – Before going into a Flotilla contact the captain of a senior officer for some training.  You have multiple ships attacking as well as other players and the tactics are a little different from normal pillaging or PVPs.

Sea Monster Hunts (SMH) – In a word – Don’t.  If you do you better be very experienced and have a war frigate of your own that you are willing to lose.  These are sinking battles and many experienced bnavers have lost their ships in SMH.  What ever you do DO NOT take anybody else’s ship into these battles and nothing smaller than a WF.

Crew Stalls – If possible, use crew stalls for your purchases.  Check the flag page for a complete list of stalls.

HELP – If you ever have any problems or questions ask the senior officers or the captain in game or you can email me.

War – If our flag goes to war you will be informed at to your duties and responsibilities from the captain.  In the mean time read this.
