Teamwork
"Morning, Syd."
Miss Parker entered her office, not too surprised to find him there.
"Good morning, Miss Parker", he responded, and Miss Parker frowned
when she heard his slightly worried tone.
"So, what's up? Straight to the point, Syd."
He sighed.
"Your father wants to see you. From what I've heard he's not at all pleased
with our work."
"Now that comes as a surprise, doesn't it, Sydney?" Miss Parker
snapped. Thirty seconds, and he was already getting on her nerves. That was a
new record. She'd had a terrible weekend, and the prospect of another long week
at the Centre added to her sullen mood.
"Miss Parker, you don't understand..."
"Save it. I'll be at my father's."
She left him standing. There was nothing he could say to make her feel better -
and even if there was, she didn't want to hear it. The times when she had let
Sydney get closer to her were over. After Tommy's death she'd decided that she
could never take that risk again. The risk of losing someone she called a friend
- someone she loved. Deep inside of her she knew that she couldn't take another
loss like that; it would kill her. The only possibility for her was to give up
her feelings.
Still thinking she reached her father's office. Following an old habit she
entered without knocking, mentally kicking herself for her stupidity only
instants later. What with the things that went on here lately, she could never
know what she would see in there...
"Hello, Angel!" her father greeted good-naturedly. Miss Parker forced
herself to smile back at him. The more she had learned about him the harder it
was for her to figure him out. Her trust in him was deeply shattered, but still
she couldn't help but wanting to believe him.
"Good morning, Daddy."
She made no move towards him, causing him to frown slightly, but then his smile
returned.
"So you already met Sydney, hm? That's good. I've got news for you,
darling."
