Leaving
"Going somewhere, lab rat?"
Jarod spun around when he heard the sneering voice. His heart sank at the sight
of Miss Parker who was standing right behind him. Her gun was aimed at his
chest. Jarod's mind was racing. What could he do now?
"Miss Parker", he said, both surprise and desperation evident in his
voice. She cocked her head, giving him a slight smile.
"Same way as last time", she said. "Getting a bit sloppy, aren't
we?"
He felt anger arise from somewhere deep within.
"I won't go back in", he growled between clenched teeth. "You'll
have to kill me first." He really meant it. Before he'd go back to the
Centre he'd rather die.
To his surprise she shrugged her shoulders.
"So why are you still standing here?" she asked, her smile widening.
His eyes narrowed, and he stared at her disbelievingly. "You're letting me
go?"
She secured her gun and put it back to its place under the hem of her skirt.
"Looks like it", Miss Parker responded, her expression sobering.
Jarod still couldn't believe it. Maybe this was a kind of game, her way of
taking revenge for all that she thought he'd done to her.
"Why?" he wanted to know, though every fibre of his being screamed at
him to leave immediately. Once again she shrugged.
"You're far more useful out there than at the Centre. But you'd better
remember this: Don't you interfere with my life anymore! Get away, do it fast
and leave everything behind. This is your only chance. If you don't take it,
I'll track you down and bring you back in. That's a promise."
