Finding A Way

The rain was gently tapping on the roof. Miss Parker lay awake in bed, listening to the soothing sound. She couldn't sleep, but by now she was used to it. It was far past midnight.

Another noise joined the sound of the falling rain. Someone was wandering through her house, and she was pretty sure she knew who her nightly visitor was. Nevertheless she reached for her gun.

About two minutes later Jarod entered her bedroom. As soon as she recognized him, Miss Parker put the gun away. If she wanted to defend herself against Jarod, she needed something more powerful than a gun.

She watched him, standing there in the moonlight, studied his handsome features. It was obvious to her that something bothered him. He sat down on the bed, returning her gaze.

"I've been thinking about us", he stated calmly.

Miss Parker cocked her head, than shrugged her shoulders.

"So have I."

"Maybe you were right. Maybe we should try to end this."

She sat up, surprised by his words. Before she could say anything, he gripped her by the shoulders, pulled her to him and kissed her, hard, wanting.

Without thinking, she returned the kiss, then broke it to get away from him.

"You think that's the way?"

"I don't know. But I need to find out."

He just looked at her, watching her closely, waiting. She considered her next move, wondering what she should do. They both knew that they couldn't go on like that. Miss Parker assumed that Jarod tried to find a way to let her go. He still saw the little girl that she'd been so long ago. Maybe, by treating her like the woman she now was, he was able to forget that image, to finally turn his back on her.

Part of her knew how wrong this was. It wouldn't work, for neither of them. Jarod had so little experience and would end up even more confused than before. And herself... She still mourned for Tommy, and she didn't know what would happen if this night should prove that she had deeper feelings for Jarod. Wouldn't that make her feelings for Tommy a lie?

"Parker."

She looked him in the eyes. He wouldn't move on against her will. Strange - she hardly felt anything. Miss Parker felt a reassuring calmth, instead of the anger, the excitement and the... fear she'd expected. Still feeling Jarod's gaze on her, she finally nodded.

This was all he had waited for. His hands rested on her shoulder as he slowly bent down to kiss her, his lips claiming her mouth, still wanting but more deliberate now. He'd become darker during the last three years, but he still was the person she'd known for all her life.
