| Building a better boombox continued... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I mounted the head unit in the hole that I cut earlier. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I then mounted the 903 tuner and the batteries to the toolbox. I used zip ties to secure them in place. After securing, I then connected the hardwire FM modulator to the head unit and attached the cable for the controller to the 903. Connected all wiring harnesses for power and speakers. Checked all wiring to make sure everything was connected properly so nothing blows up when I apply power. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Connected all wiring to the speakers. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Attached the antenna to the 903. This completes my setup. Also placed the battery charger inside to take with me whenever I take the boombox. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Took boombox outside to verify operation and to make sure everything was working properly. 903 controller is velcroed where you see it now. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This project took me a couple of hours to build. I had everything ready to go so it wouldn't take me that long to put it together. The only things I really had to buy was another battery and the battery charger. Parts list consisted of: Toolbox JVC KS-FX11 head unit Pioneer GEX-FM903XM universal XM Satellite Radio tuner Profile SP62 2 way speakers Two batteries: one from a UPS that quit workng and another one from RadioShack Vector VEC0080 1/2 amp fully automatic battery charger SPST switch various crimp-on connectors for battery terminals,etc. |

| I've managed to get about an average of 4 1/2 hours of runtime when volume is set to 2/3 of max level. I will add another battery in the near future to extend the runtime. As for the weight this thing is not light. Each battery itself weighs about 7 pounds a piece. I would say it weighs about 25 lbs. I usually keep the antenna inside the box on top of the head unit as long as I am not surrounded by trees. Whenever I start to get dropouts I take the antenna and sit it on top of the boombox or move it a few feet away to maximize reception.
