American Pit Bull Terrier
Breed Info, Links, and Adoption Rescue
This page is dedicated to all you responsible pit bull owners who help make the breed recognizable as a loving family dog.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a dog infamous for its aggresive behavior towards other dogs and humans; a killing machine that should be outlawed due to its dangerous nature.

This is the myth created by the media.  Street dogs, dogs that have been owned by dealers or mobs, or dogs who have just not been raised by the right person can go bad and become the newest story for the media.  Any dog can bite a child, kill a person, or attack other animals, not just a pit bull.

In truth, the pit bull can be a loving, obidient dog who excels is therapy work, weight pulling, drug detection, police dogs, guard dogs, seeing eye dogs, or just a plain couch potato.  With proper socialization and training, a pit bull is a wonderful dog to own.  Due to their past history in bullbaiting and dogfighting, they are not for the inexperienced owners or those who cannot provide enough time with their dog.  People who can't give the love, support, and time to their dog, pit or not, does not deserve to own a dog.  I am the proud owner of a pit bull, also my first so far.  My dog is a wonderful, people loving, protective, and obidient house dog.  He loves cats and other dogs and especially food.  He has never bitten or growled at another animal or a human.  I will soon be adding additional pit bulls to the family.
For the sake of all you misguided people, I am 18, working full-time and going to college. I refused to live on-campus, and picked out a 3 bedroom house with a 1.5 acre fenced yard for the sole purpose of my dog's freedom to have the run of the house and yard.  Some of you might think I'm crazy to work so hard to ensure my dog's happiness, but those of you who know how much unconditional love a dog can give, I know it makes perfect sense.
History of the Pit Bull
The APBT originated in England by a cross of many dogs, including an extinct breed, terriers, and bulldogs. It was used for bullbaiting and bear fighting because of its incredible courage and determination.  Dogs that fought until death were considered game and highly recognized in the fighting community.  Then called Bull-Terriers, soon these dogs became popular and the game changed into dog-eat-dog.  The most game dogs were brought together in a pit (hence the name) to fight until the death, or until an owner withdrew his dog from the fight.  When a dog turned his back to the other dog, or seemed to lack interest, they were seperated and if the dog did not lunge at his opponent within 10 seconds they were defeated.  Dogs that were not game or lost interest were usually euthanized.  These dogs were not human-aggressive even then.  Each owner washed his opponents dog to ensure that they were not poisoned or covered in something that could prove harmful to the other dog.  When bullbaiting, if a dog was gored the owner would try to catch his dog on his shoulders.  Instead of biting his master, the dog would only go after his target once more.  Once dogfighting became illegal, it was still growing and pit bulls had by now been introduced into the United States.
Some people, used these dog on the farm to herd and protect livestock while the army recruited some for war.  Many of these dogs saved numerous lives by helping to capture the enemy, or protect one of their many humans from dangerous mines or intruders.  These media monster was once a symbol for the troops who protected our country.  Its sad to see that a dog once so highly regarded as a loving protecter is now seen as a monster in the eyes of so many.
