The Descending God
With wings pointing upward as if he were descending from the sky, the image of
the Descending God appears frequently throughout Tulum. Some researchers believe
that this was a regional deity, associated with Venus and rain. Others believe it
may represent the god of bee-keeping, Ah Mucen Cab. A belief in a Descending
God existed among many Mesoamerican peoples, although the symbolism varied widely.
For example, the Aztecs had a Descending God known as Tzontemoc, and associated
him with the setting sun.
