SECOND INDIA-ASEAN BUSINESS SUMMIT

September 2003 : India

I am delighted to inform you that, after the great success of the First India-ASEAN Business Summit, we are now planning to hold the Second India-ASEAN Business Summit in September 2003, jointly with the Government of India and Confederation of India Industry (CII). The Summit, which would be for one and a half day in New Delhi and one day in another city, is expected to be inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in New Delhi. Several ministers / VVIPs and leading businesses from India and the ASEAN countries are likely to participate in the event.

Total two-way trade between India and the ASEAN region has grown at a cumulative average growth rate (CAGR) of 11.1% during 1991-2001, to reach close to the US$10 billion mark. This compares favourably with the CAGR of 9.6% recorded by India's total trade during the same period. Cumulative FDI approvals from the ASEAN countries into India during 1991-2002 were approximately US$ 4021 million and constituted 6.11 per cent of the total approvals granted by the Government of India during the period.

The First India-ASEAN Business Summit contributed significantly to this intensification of trade & investment links between India and the ASEAN region. More than 500 Indian and over 200 ASEAN business delegates participated in the deliberations. The Second Business Summit seeks to build on the momentum generated by attracting quality Indian and ASEAN participation for the various business sessions that will cover all sectors important in the context of India-ASEAN business ties.

We will shortly be sending you more information regarding the event, which is likely to take place between September 1-10, 2003. Meanwhile, we request you to block your diaries accordingly.
