Introduction

The Universe of the Four Gods is an enchantment, a book, a mystical world, and the story of the reader of the book, who is trapped by the enchantment within the mystical world, until the story reaches its conclusion. Confused? Not as half confused as poor Miaka, a Tokyo girl, who reads the book and then finds herself being saved from lecherous bandits, by a gorgeous heero, becoming the high priestess of a bird, and befriending an Emperor- just so she can get home! 

Chipper junior high-school Miaka is trying to study as hard as she can to get into Joan High School just like her mother wants her to. During a study session in the City Central Library, Miaka and her best friend Yui find a strange Book, The Universe of the Four Gods. As they start to read, the book draws them pysically into its universe! After a short adventure and meeting with the dashing Tamahome; a young man with the symbol of the ogre on his forehead, Yui returns to modern day Tokyo thinking it was only a dream. Miaka is left behind. 

Miaka figures out that somehow she has traveled back to ancient China. There she finds that she is being offered the role of the book's heroine, The Young Lady of Legends who will be granted three wishes and special powers by the god Suzaku. First she must gather all seven celestial warriors of Suzaku, and then she can save the Empire and travel back home, hopefully.
