Q. What happened to your knee? You had a bandage today?
MARY PIERCE: I have something called a posterior capsule which is in trouble. That's what I was told.
Q. Now you have three nationalities, your father is American, you were born in Canada, so you're Canadian. I was wondering whether you will have a fourth nationality with your boyfriend and if you are going to learn Spanish?
MARY PIERCE: You mean, to speak Spanish?
Q. I wonder whether you are going to have a fourth nationality and if you are going to learn a third language.
MARY PIERCE: No. I tried to study Spanish. I understand. I tried to speak a little bit, but that's all.
Q. Could you answer an interview in Spanish?
MARY PIERCE: Not yet. Next year maybe.
Q. Yesterday you seemed very calm after your victory. It's still the same case today. You said that maybe tomorrow you would have more emotions. What is happening now with your feelings?
MARY PIERCE: No, I'm happy. Maybe I'm so tired that I don't feel much. But anyway, it's a pleasure for me to win today. I love playing with Martina. I have a lot of fun with her on the court. As I said, it's our first title together. I hope it's not the last one and we are going to continue in this way.
Q. What did you say with Martina before starting the finals? You had met each other in the semifinals in singles, didn't go well for Martina. What did you say before this match?
MARY PIERCE: Like for every match, we spoke about strategy, what we are going to do, playing our game, normal things. Nothing changed.
Q. Martina maybe has a problem of motivation after the finals.
MARY PIERCE: No, both of us.
Q. Martina, aren't you a bit envious of Mary that she won this Grand Slam title?
MARTINA HINGIS: Well, she played a great match. I congratulate her. She's a great partner. It was a lot of fun playing with her. I lost maybe in the singles, but I tried to stay in the tournament, focus, help with what I could, make it the easiest for her to also stay focused for the singles finals. Today she played better doubles than me. It's all teamwork. I played better some days; her today. That's the most important, you know. I'm very happy for her. I know how it feels. I had it three times in Australia. It's just great leaving a tournament with having two titles under the belt.
Q. Did you watch the final yesterday?
MARTINA HINGIS: Well, I practiced and I watched it on TV a little bit. Played very well. It was a good match.
Q. Do you think Mary can become No. 1 in the world?
MARTINA HINGIS: Hopefully not (laughter). If we play doubles, one of the serves or return, I'm going to bang it in her head. She's going to get close (laughter).
Q. Is it a logical thing to believe becoming No. 1 after winning a Grand Slam, is it an objective for you?
MARY PIERCE: No. I always say the same thing. I think for all people playing a sport, the main goal is to become No. 1 in what they're doing. So the dream is to become No. 1, of course, but being No. 1 is very difficult. You have to be very consistent; you have to play every day every tournament. This is what I didn't have before. I was not consistent enough, so I'm very pleased of what I did this tournament, and I have to keep on working and to play like that more regularly.
Q. I'm going to ask the question differently. Do you believe you have the capacities to achieve this goal?
MARY PIERCE: When I play well, I can beat anybody. I did it already. But to become No. 1 you have to play well all the time. That's the difficulty.
Q. You played with Jana Novotna and Anna Kournikova. What is different in playing doubles with Mary?
MARTINA HINGIS: Mary is a killer. She's got so much power. Even I think when I saw the match yesterday in singles, that also helped her singles. She's playing much better volleys now, more aggressive. It's just mentally for confidence it helps a lot. That's why I kept playing doubles, because just mentally you get stronger, you believe in it more. It just helps. From what I saw yesterday in the singles, you didn't miss a volley at the net.
MARY PIERCE: It helps. Definitely it helps playing doubles, helps your singles.
MARTINA HINGIS: I think we're a great team because, you know, she's got all the power and I got more the finesse or the placement. She learned a lot from me (laughter). She's getting dangerous.
