Hingis completes title sweep

Martina Hingis became the first player in six years to sweep both singles and doubles crowns at the du Maurier Open, teaming with Nathalie Tauziat for a x-x, x-x triumph over Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama on Sunday.

Tauziat and Hingis, the No. 2 seeds in doubles at the $1.08 million (US) women's event, outplayed the top seeds on Centre Court at du Maurier Stadium. For Hingis, it was her second straight doubles title in Montreal. She combined with Jana Novotna for the doubles crown in 1998.

Hingis took an approximately one-hour break after her singles win against Serena Williams before returning to the court for the doubles final. The Swiss-French duo shared $50,000 (US) for the victory, their first as a team.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario was the last player to collect both singles and doubles championships. The Barcelona Bumblebee defeated Steffi Graf in a marathon singles final in 1994 that started at 1 p.m. and didn't finish until 8 p.m. thanks to a series of rain delays. Sanchez-Vicario took a short break and then teamed with Meredith McGrath to win the doubles event.
