HINGIS DERAILS RUBIN

By Nyree Epplett
Top seed Martina Hingis wasted little time in accounting for American Chanda Rubin, advancing to the semi final with a 6-1 6-3 victory on Tuesday.

The effortless triumph moved Hingis in to her fourth consecutive Roland Garros semi final, and one step closer to the only Grand Slam crown yet to line her trophy cabinet.

The Swiss Miss took a mere 57 minutes to dispose of the nervous American on Court Suzanne Lenglen this afternoon, walloping 14 winners past her opponent to set up a clash with sixth seed Mary Pierce, a three set winner over Monica Seles today.

The 24-year-old Rubin had posted some notable wins en route to the fourth round (namely over No7 seed Nathalie Tauziat and then the accomplished 1988 finalist Natasha Zvereva) but was unable to find her feet on the damp red clay on Tuesday, committing 27 unforced errors and hitting only six winners.

Hingis, who had grizzled about feeling cold on court during some of her early-morning matches this tournament (Paris is unseasonably cool for this time of year) came prepared today, decked out in bike shorts that crept out from beneath her tennis skirt.

The five-time Grand Slam winner solidly dictated play from the baseline against Rubin, cleverly mixing the points up with an array of cute drop shots that continually surprised the uncharacteristically slow American. The top seed has now notched up six straight victories over Rubin.

"I'm very happy. I played a very good match and tried to concentrate from early on," said the world No1, who lost an emotional final here last year to Steffi Graf.

By reaching the semi finals, Hingis will now retain her top singles ranking.
