A. The course and what we will be covering:
1. Quarter 1-Nature of Science, Chemistry of Life, Ecology, Cell Biology, Cells & Energy
2. Quarter 2-Genetics, Molecular Biology, Principles of Evolution, Viruses, Prokaryotes, Protists, Fungi,
3. Quarter 3-Plants: Diversity, Structure, Function, Growth, Reproduction, Responses; Human Body Systems: Nervous System, Endocrine System, Respiratory System, Circulatory Systems, Immune System, Digestive Systems, Excretory Systems, Integumentary Systems
4. Quarter 4- Human Reproduction and Development, Animal Diversity: Invertebrates, Arthropods, Vertebrates, Amniotes, Animal Behavior
B. Labs are scheduled throughout each quarter.
II. Grading Policies
A. Grading System
1. Chapter Tests 40%, Final Quarter Exams 10%
2. Projects, Labs, Activities, Homework 50%
B. Grades are based on the following percentages:
1. 100% to 91% is an A; 90.1% to 89.5% is an A-; 89.4% to 87% is a B+
2. 86.9 to 81% is a B; 80.9 to 79% is a B-; 78.9% to 77% is a C+
3. 76.9% to 71% is a C; 70.9% to 67% is a C-;
4. 66.9% is a D+, 66.8% to 60% is a D
5. 59.9 % to 55% is a D-;
6. 54.9% or below is an F
C. Semester grades are the average of the 1st and 2nd quarter percentages, and 3rd and 4th quarter percentages.
III. Grades are posted on my website.
A. No names are on the website. Your grades listed by the last four digits of your school identification number.
B. Homework for the week is posted on the home page.
C. Parent letter, Lecture notes and miscellaneous items are posted on the web site.
IV. Due dates:
A. All assignments must be turned at the end of the school day on the due date or before the due date
1. Exceptions: sick, family trip or emergency
a. Assignments are due the first day back from an absence.
2. Homework is due no later than Friday.
B. Each day the an assignment is late, there is a 10% deduction, up to 100%.
V. Extra credit for early work or work typed on a word processor:
1. 10% for either; 20% for both typing and turning in the assignment early.
VI. Be on time:
A. You will be late to the next class after this one, more than once. I don’t like you to be late to your next class.
1. I will write you a note to your next class, if you are late.
2. This will not happen often.
B. Please be on time to my class. Your teacher from the previous period does not want you to be late to my class.
1. Bring a note from your last class if you will be late.
2. Be seated before the bell rings.
3. Tardies result in detention time.
a. I never use my lunch for a student to serve detentions.
b. You will lose 20 points per tardy.
c. 20 points will be given back for each detention you serve; 1 tardy = -20 points
C. Referrals:
1. Three or more tardies will receive referrals
2. Breaking classroom policies or school policies results in referrals.
3. All other referrals will be issued per district policy.
VII. Classroom Procedures:
A. Raise hand during lectures
1. please ask questions during lecture to elaborate or give you examples of idea if you do not understand
2. save questions not specifically directed towards the topic.
B. Raise hand during discussions.
1. this is any time after lecture, specifically for questions or opinions other than lecture material i.e. assignments, tests, weird science, etc.
C. Refrain from interruptions:
1. of me
2. your classmates
D. You will be acknowledged any time you raise your hand.
1. if I cannot answer a question(s), I’ll tell you and you can see me sometime when it is convenient for you
2. or I’ll try and find out
E. One restroom pass per quarter:
a. one person at a time.
b. you will receive 20 points of extra credit for the pass you do not use, at the end of the quarter.
VIII. Class Procedures:
A. Come in quietly and sit at your assigned seat.
B. Check board for today’s assignments:
1. Take out any appropriate materials.
2. Make sure you pickup any handouts.
C. Take out daily planer on Monday:
1. Write down homework assignments.
2. Write down dates for quizzes or tests
D. For lab:
1. Take handouts
2. Listen to procedures
3. Write down any changes
4. Break up into your assigned group and begin lab procedures.
E. For projects or activities:
1. Listen to instructions.
2. Break up into your group/team and begin.
F. Clean up the classroom
1. Straighten up the chairs, desks and or any lab materials, pickup any papers from the floor.
G. Wait for dismissal:
1. The bell does not dismiss the class.
2. Please walk out of class.
H. General Materials you will need during the year:
1. Daily planner, pens or pencils, line paper, biology folder for: all graded work, homework and activities.
2. All work will be stored in a plane folder; one that allows assignments to be secured within.
a. Please, no expensive ringed binders, Peachy folders, etc; slim and simple.
