High Schools Bar Military Recruiters;
GOP To Shelve Its Own Principle
On Local Control With Federal Edict
In Washington, DC Republicans members of Congress are pushing their
conservative agenda in the name of fighting terrorism -- often at the expense
of queers and often at the expense of education. . For example, Congress seems
ready to approve legislation that would deny all federal money to any high
school nationwide, that bars military recruiters because of Armed Forces
discrimination against queer folk.
According to the Senate Armed Services Committee, in 1999 there were 4,515
instances in which high schools denied access to Army recruiters, 4,364
instances for the Navy; 4,884 for the Marine Corps; and 5,465 for the Air Force. The rationale is, the military has to get
into those schools to attract officers to lead the war against Osama bin Laden.
By the way, the Republican party stands for local control of public schools, not federal edicts; except where conservative ideology is involved
