Most of you will remember that 5 years ago we raised money in memory of Shelly Lawson.
The plan back then was to work with Mr. Palmer and Mr. Greer to make a donation of books to the library and set up a scholarship in Shelly's name.
Not long after that reunion, Debbie D'Angelo went to John Hopkins Hospital in Maryland to begin treatments to fight her battle with breast cancer.
It was a long and hard procedure, but Debbie made it through like the trooper is she! Over the years, she and I would talk about getting together with
the people at the high school.... but for whatever reason we would table it for another day. That day never came. And the 25 Year Reunion Committee was now faced
with the task of "what do we do with this money?" We tossed around the idea of still doing a small scholarship. One committee member told of how his
family curently has an athletic scholarship at MHS, and explained how much management goes into something like that IF you want to be in control of who is the
receipient.
After much discussion, it was decided that I should visit with Mr. Bocan (the principal) and see if there was another area that needed a financial boost and
to also get information on how we would go about setting up a scholarship. In January I arrived at the high school, and learned of a new and exciting program!
The old "AV" department has become the "Basic and Fortran" of our time. I was given a tour of the facilities, and saw the room where the morning announcements
are now broadcast into each classroom. I was taken to the control room and saw where students broadcast sporting events to the community. Next I talked to the
teacher in charge of the program... and learned his vision for the future of this class. I was VERY excited about the possibilities by the time I left.
When the Reunion Committee met on January 28th.. it was decided that with the consent of our classmate, we would like to persue the idea of making a donation
towards purchasing more equipment for this class. With the money that we raised in Shelly's memory, MHS would be able to purchase another video editing computer.
This will allow more students to get the time they need to produce quality videos.. and it is the ultimate hope of Mr. Bocan that it will also lead to the school's
ability to offer this class to more students.
Now.... Tell us what you think! E-mail us and let us know if you like the idea...
Or do you think we should do something else???
You have until March 1st!
