Your name shall be added here with your donation commitment--be it monetary donation, door prize, or your personal sing & dance or comedy routine!   ;-)  Mahalo!)
NEW ATTENDESS LISTED FROM THE 1ST OF AUGUST ARE LISTED IN BOLD PRINT: Judy (Estrella-Pahukoa), Barbara (Silva-Rodrigues), and Inocencio (Medrano). Reminder to those names in RED that your check is due for the hotel seat at the kau-kau table, please. Thank you!
The room at the Maui Beach Hotel will be available at 9:30am. The Committee discussed the placement and setup of tables for the door prizes, pupus, sound system, and registration.
The Committee has received payment for 37 who plan to attend the reunion. There are 50 who indicated through the survey that they planned to attend the reunion. Thirteen have yet to pay. Reminder:  July 15th is the deadline for payment.
Howard announced that the Webmaster/CyberEditor has decided not to continue the website right after the reunion. Check out the website: http://www.geocities.com/mhs64sabers/
Emphasis was placed on the attendance and participation at the next meeting because of the close proximity of the reunion itself, less than 2 months away!
Next committee meeting July 16, 2009.
To answer the question posed by Bozo, the luncheon begins at 11am and is endured till 2pm. Those on the visual committee can make their appearance at 9:45.
New Business:   none
An Afterthought:
Yahoo, who hosts our class website via their Geocities subsidiary,
has slyly notified our Webmaster, Sharon (Watanabe-Souza), its intention to soon cease operations of the gratis site. Subsequently, both Fay & Howard suggested the possibility that the class sponsor a similar site, should such action necessitate it. More vigorous discussion will be sought at the next meeting.
Another Afterthought:
The next meeting was set:   June 18. Same time, same place, same cast.
Minutes submitted by Stan (Chong-Kee).
The Minutes of the March 14 meeting, a list of the confirmed
Sept 12 reunion attendees, and a copy of the April 13 ASB
Statement were handed out.
Not to be outdone, Howard passed out his own handout. This
missive, in worksheet form, detailed the most current summary of
the answered questionnaire. The "magic 50" has been reached.
Maui Beach takes from us no more.
Old New Business:
Bozo reported that, per Q-Boy (Edwin N.), the promised license plate holders were presently being "processed, pressed & printed ." He, Bozo, will be passing through Las Vegas pretty soon and promised to pick them up. The price, per plate, will be $18.
Howard also received an email from Kenneth (Imamura), offering Oregon treasures, should the Reunion Committee desire. It was the consensus to accept anything, refuse nothing, but do it tactfully. Unsure, Howard said he'd try.
To reiterate, the Reunion Luncheon will be a "No-Host" affair regarding liquor.
New Old Business:
Before ending, reunion fees were received from:  Carol (Moto), Freddie (Corpuz), and Ronald Baybayan.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 28, 2009.
The meeting commenced at 6:22pm & ended at 7:00pm, a full 38 minutes. Which raises the questions:  Is the time utilized for camaraderie being infringed? Is morsel consumption losing its significance? Are we being overwhelmed by structure? Or, as Paul Simon once mused:  Is the theater really dead?
Minutes submitted by Stan (Chong-Kee).
It was not the best of times, nor the worst. It was simply the most appropriate  ..  it followed supper [we say dinner in Hawaii]. And, it commenced at 6:50 P.M.
Financial Business:
Old Business:
(Cordeiro), Alan & Stella
Before the meeting ended, the following, also, paid their fees:
(Platiro), Howard & Fay M.
Bozo firmed up another issue that was still unresolved. Bill Mars of Marmac, confirmed donating door prizes worth $500, thereby relieving both Eileen & Stella, who were, previously, the designated door prize go-getters.
New Business:
End Business:
And then there was...
No Business [pau].
Minutes submitted by S. (Chong-Kee).
Jeffrey opened the meeting by announcing that informative mailouts must be
sent ASAP. So far, only 39 people have committed to the luncheon at M. Beach Hotel. The class will be charged at least the minimum of 50, so the
word must be spread.
Ongoing Business:   Bozo informed us that Marmac requires a letter confirming our reunion before donations of any sort are forthcoming. According to him, they've indicated an assortment of door prizes is contemplated. Also, Paradise (Fast Food and Catering) will be donating Aku & Tako Poke. An additional entree may be included.
Howard made a menu-driven DVD Music Disc that has 213 songs. What's unique is the fact that we remember every one. With the proper equipment,
this is all the entertainment needed.
Howard prepared and made copies of the afore-mentioned mailouts, and
everyone participated in the folding, stuffing and sealing of them. Eileen
will mail them and get reimbursed for the postage.
New Business:   Bozo voiced an opinion that some others share. Presently, we have approximately $600 in the checking. The balance will fluctuate a little, but will remain close to that amount because everyone, basically, pays for the goods received. His opinion was that the money should be used on the committee. After all, the committee is the one doing all of the
work. Many of us contribute in a variety of ways, i.e. Howard gives of his time and pocket, all material that he makes and gives out; Sharon, at her own
expense, keeps the class website up and running; Laura, Eileen, Gail, and
Stella come to mind when decorations are needed; Herbert, at previous
mailings, made available all of the copies and envelopes; Gail contacted most
of us before every meeting, and has done numerous mailings of her own;
Bozo secured beverages and monetary donations, and, frequently, has
donated personally. Others have done their share gratis, expecting no reimbursement. Our monthly dinner meetings are paid personally. Because
this issue should not be taken lightly, it was suggested that it be tabled till the next meeting, whereby a more comprehensive discussion can be held.
Adjournment:   The meeting was adjourned following the setting of the next meeting, which was decided to be held on March 19, 2009.
Minutes submitted by Stan (Chong-Kee) on March 2, 2009.
Financial Matters:
The ASB Bank Statement revealing the financial status of our uniquely assembled cabal was distributed. A balance of $631.61 stagnates within its vaults.
Pertinent Business:
With Maui Beach being the official Reunion designate, additional details continued. Jeffery, through his "laid back" facade but succinct demeanor, gave the following:
1.   An accord between Maui Beach & The Class of '64 has been obtained. Preferring not to hesitate fearing future rate fluctuations, Jeffery factored in at $15, plus tax & tip ($17.97), per person.
2.   He guaranteed the reservations, 9 AM to 2 PM, with a $250 deposit. A second deposit of $628.90 (half of $1,257.80, the 50 person minimum requirement) comes due August 12, with the remainder and final count on September 4.
3.   We're permitted on the premises prior to the prescribed time (9:45 AM), for personal interior enhancements.
Asides were many. Those of applicable relevance were:
1.   Poke [po-kay] donation:   Bozo. A liability release letter discharging Maui Beach from losses resulting from the consumption of food not prepared by them, will be filed. In addition, a donation request to Marmac, also by Bozo, will be initiated. [What is Marmac?]
2.   Three (3) Maui High School jackets:   Carol. Her employment there prompted this generous overture and was well received.
3.   Decorating Committee:   Carol, Gail & Fay. Albeit lacking the enthusiasm desired, they consented. A budget of $200 was suggested and agreed upon.
4.   Registration:   Howard. A registration form of his design, with the necessary inclusions, will be created. Assembling the material for mailing will be exercised at the next meeting. A second mailing emphasizing the importance of an immediate response to ensure placement must be mailed by July.
Old Hand Business:
The delusion of obtaining previous Reunion photographs was laid to rest. Meetings with Mervin Suyama by Dennis & Howard failed to produce the anticipated results.
No More Business:
With the scheduling of the next Reunion gathering (February 19, 2009), the meeting was adjourned.
Minutes submitted by S. (Chong-Kee). Stan, please continue with your writing format because we love it! Stan needs to contribute his fantastic writing skills to this website as honorary Cyber assistant. The presentation is priceless, Stan. I can't wait for the next Minutes to be presented, so don't disappoint, okay?
It's official:   Maui Beach Hotel has been selected as the site of our next Class Reunion, via a close but unanimously convincing vote of preference.
Dani's lost its allure when the required minimum of 100 people proved
theoretically unattainable. It's planned as a lengthy luncheon, thereby
incorporating the much-anticipated issues of significance that our discussions lead to within the time required to comprehensively accomplish that feat.
Jeffrey, who assumed the point position, will research, review, then relay his findings, thus permitting us to relive, once more, our days of farcicality. In other words, Dani's was junk. Jeffrey going call and find out how much going cost (lunch was more cheap), if need deposit, and going try see if can get upstairs.
This much has been decided:   Hawaiian Food, 60's Music and Door Prizes, so enthusiastically suggested by Eileen. Reluctantly, she agreed to take the helm, but only if Stella (Cordiero) co-chaired. Jeffrey will also inquire if alumni who are desirous of lodging at that establishment are eligible for the most reasonable of room rates.
Another topic discussed and decided was the displacement of a designated
check account signee. Elton Wada was selected to share that honor (?).
The next meeting of the minds will be January 12, 2009. The usual array of suspects will be there.
Meeting Adjourned.
Addendum
Jeffrey contacted Maui Beach Hotel and reported the following:
1.   Signed the agreement cementing reunion date of Sept. 12, 2009.
Minutes submitted by S. (Chong-Kee).
Present:  E. (Oshiro-Taketa), F. (Murakami-Platiro), C. (Moto), S. (Espania-Cordiero), G. (Aoki-Terada), H. & V. (Matsubayashi), E. & S. (Wada), R. (Baybayan), D. (Watanabe), T. (Gusman), J. (Komoda), & S. (Chong-Kee).
Following were announced:
Bozo:  Maui B. Hotel offers Hawaiian food at both Poolside (upstairs) & Ballroom (downstairs) for lunch, but only Ballroom for dinner. Lunch price is $15, plus tax & tip; dinner price is $28, plus tax & tip. If lunch is preferred, a partitioned section fronting the stage can be made available from 9am to 2pm. A minimum of 75 people is required.
Being that a choice of food arrangements, catered or uncatered (restaurant/hotel), was first needed, Jeffrey put it to vote. Results were eight to six in favor of uncatered.
In addition to Maui B. Hotel, Dani's was also suggested. Dennis W. will gather information regarding event date availability of hall, menu & prices, & report back to the committee at the next meeting. Besides the dinner & golf tournament, it was suggested that another activity be included for the reunion. Again, this is to be discussed at the next meeting.
Stan reported on the financial status of the class, stating that there's $594.61 in the checking account. He suggested, after we decide on the venue & menu, we discuss setting fee amounts for the reunion.
The next meeting will be Monday, Dec. 1, 2008. Same time, same place, same people [hopefully, new people, too].
Addendum:
Per Jeffrey:  He called the Parks Dept. and learned that the E. Tam Com. Center (C/C) is available on September 12, 2009, but the H. Tavares C/C isn't. The rent is $210. That, coupled w/ catering, will probably cost each person about $l0.
Also, Dennis said that Dani's requires at least 100 people before the hall's usage is permitted.
Submitted by S. (Chong-Kee)
Members present:  Terry "Bozo" (Gusman), Elton and Sandy (Wada), Dennis (Watanabe), Herbert and Vicky (Matsubayashi), Eileen (Oshiro-Taketa), Laura (Fernandez) and Hal (Nishida), Stella (Espania-Cordeiro), Ronald (Baybayan), Carol (Moto), Fay (Murakami-Platiro), Gail (Aoki-Terada), Co-Chairs Jeff (Komoda) and Stanley (Chong-Kee)
More than 30 responses to our questionnaire were received. Some committee members not in attendance at the last meeting did not receive their questionnaire in the mail. They were delivered at the meeting. Currently, there are 32 classmates and spouses planning to attend our reunion on 12 September 2009. This count will likely increase. The minimum for banquets varies from 50-75 people.
Terry "Bozo" Gusman hosted a banquet at Maui Beach this past weekend. He held the gathering at the poolside dining area. There were over 140 attendees at a cost of $20 per person. Update: today (Oct.21) I received a call from Tanya, Maui Beach. September 12 is available for next year. For the Hawaiian Buffet poolside for lunch, the cost is $15, plus tax and tip. For dinner, Japanese buffet upstairs is $28 or Ballroom Hawaiian buffet is $28. Minimum of 75 people required.
The committee has reconsidered catering a dinner or lunch at one of three locations:  The Rinzai Zen M., Paia (Eileen), the Kahului Com. Center (Hal) and H. Nanea at the old Maui Electric (Dennis: Update Oct. 21 - Not available for Sept. 12, 2009). The names in parentheses will inquire about the availability on 12 September 2009. We have a number of caterers that we can contact. The approximate cost, per person, for the Hawaiian buffet, will be between $5 and $7. Jeff will coordinate Golf Day.
The committee plans to make a final decision at the next meeting scheduled at Yakiniku Restaurant on 10 November 2008. We will need to submit a deposit to reserve the location and date if we decide upon our own catering, or a restaurant.

Who:   MHS Class of '64
Present:   E. & S. (Wada), F. & H. (Platiro), G. (Aoki-Terada), V. & H. (Matsubayashi),? S. (Cordiero), J. (Komoda), T. (Gusman), D. (Watanabe), & S. (Chong-Kee)
Dennis W. did talk w/ Mervin S. regarding the missing reunion photos that were discussed @ the last meeting, and?was told that he didn't have them.? Being that Howard P. is familiar w/ the issue, he will try talking w/ Mervin S. If can, can. If no can, no can. Still, it would be nice to have a complete photo array of past reunions. Howard will, also, email to those?interested the dates & places of those reunions.?? Photos are on his Drop Shots site.
Dennis talked w/ a Mr. Spencer regarding Hale Nanea as a possible gathering site for our next reunion.? The deposit is $250 and, upon completed inspection, $100 is returned.
Jeffrey handed out menus for Caf頏 Lei (the old Dunes). A bit pricey, but still t/b considered. Howard talked(?) w/ R. (Matsumoto's) contact and gave him Jeffrey's name .. he never contacted Jeffrey.? Howard will follow up w/ Randall .. hope Randall follows up on his end. Jeffrey, also, reported that Sam Sato's is a definite no.
Vickie M. passed out menus for The Maui Tropical Plantation.? It's more reasonable, and a Casino Night can be held, if we choose to have one, but it's only till 10pm .. bummas for us party animals.
Jeffrey will compose a letter notifying everyone of the reunion date to allow them scheduling & arrangement time.
When completed, Herbert will make copies. Then the stuffing & folding will be done @ a later meeting.
Jeffrey will inform Howard of the date & time of the next meeting .. He'll be hosting it .. Pot luck.

Present:
Eileen (Oshiro-Taketa), Fay (Murakami-Platiro), Howard (Platiro), Stella (Espania-Cordeiro), Gail (Aoki-Terada), Herbert & Vickie (Matsubayashi), Elton & Sandy (Wada), Dennis (Watanabe), Bozo (Gusman), Ronald (Baybayan), Susan (Ogata-Oshiro), Allan (Yamashiro), Carol (Moto), Barbara & Stan (Chong-Kee).
Upon discovery of the $794.13 balance in the ASB Account Statement, two questions were asked:  1.  What was to become of the shrink proof balance of the $600 plus? 2.  What was the reason for the increase in funds? The first was already on the agenda under New Business and was discussed then. The second was the fees collected from the thirteen alumni guaranteeing their reservations for the September 12 reunion. Appeased, for awhile, we proceeded to the next item on the agenda.
To date, the confirmed (paid) alumni attendees are:
(Gusman), Terry & Sandy
(Matsubayashi), Herbert & Vickie
(Nitta), Brian
(Takushi), Karl & Pat
(Wada), Elton & Sandy
(Watanabe), Dennis & Patti

(Terada), Gail A.
On March 3, at the Asian Star Restaurant, "QBoy" Edwin (Nishijo) announced that license plate holders made in Vegas with an MHS personalization was available. Tonight, Bozo reviewed QBoy's announcement, and informed us of the importance of ordering soon to receive them by the Sept. 12 reunion. Also, the design needed to be decided upon. Gail suggested a "generic" design with no class affiliation. This offered other alumni the opportunity to purchase them, and, at the same time, revealed a money-making option. The other design depicted a specific class, ours. Being that differing designs didn't affect the cost, both would be used. Herbert suggested that the stagnated portion of the class funds be used to purchase holders for the committee members, thereby utilizing the phantom phunds ["PP"]. Howard reminded the committee that this needed committee approval. A motion was made and was passed, unanimously. The individual cost was $22.50, but QBoy said that an increased order lowered the cost.
It was decided that the next meeting be held on April 16, 2009.

45th-Yr. Reunion Meeting
Held on April 14, 2008
Yakiniku Restaurant

The date was set for the 2009 Get Together:  Sept. 12. The suggested locations fell into two categories:  Catered and Establishment Provided (E/P).
Catered:  Hale Nanea, to be researched & reported (R&R) back to the committee at the next meeting by Dennis W., Kahului Community Center
E/P:  Caf頏le', to be R&R'd by Jeffrey K. Maui Tropical Plantation to be R&R'd by Vickie M.
Sam Sato's to be R&R'd by Jeffrey K.
Program:  Entertainment discussions centered around a DVD w/ '60s background music that'll be projected onto multi screens throughout the evening. Howard P. will be producing it. Also, Jeffrey K. volunteered to coordinate a golf tournament sometime during that weekend. (There will be a golf tournament at the Dunes of Maui Lani if there is sufficient interest. The date and format will depend upon the number of players.) Depending on the facility chosen, a Casino Nite may be held. Bozo will coordinate.
A letter informing classmates of the planned reunion will be written by Jeffrey K. When completed, they'll be folded, sealed and stuffed during a meeting. In the letter, Jeffrey will ask if anyone has pictures of the 20th reunion. Howard mentioned that the reunion is the only one of which he has no pictures. Being that Dennis W. has seen Mervin S., who has a copy of those pictures, he'll ask him.
Meeting adjourned at 8 PM, or thereabouts.

There were winners and there were losers; but all those who attended felt like winners for being there to share in the friendship and fellowship and memories.
The following are comments from those that were there:
