Mrs. Gradgrind
As the wife of Thomas Gradgrind, Mrs. Gradgrind provides a foil to her husband's strict beliefs in reason and fact.  She does not view the world through the same calculating perspective as her husband but as her whiney characterization implies, she has a lack of energy and determination to challenge him.

Mrs. Gradgrind's characterization as weak and uninspired is Dickens's view of those in society that understand the social consequences of its material and capital based existence.  Those that understand the true nature of our culture do not take a stand to educate society on the consequences of their reality.
