He is a well educated and clever man who seeks to make Thomas Gradgrind his mentor and enter politics. As he continually seeks to fill his life with entertainment, Harthouse resolves to seduce Louisa Gradgrind regardless of her marraige. Harthouse's character represents those open and creative minds that allow themselves to be used in the capitalistic and rational social system. These useful minds are conditioned under the same values as a Gradgrind or Bounderby philosophy and therefore wasted. |
