Dear Neighbor:

Major construction activities for the Grand Avenue underpass project at Glendale Avenue and 59th Avenue will begin Monday morning, May 16. A half-mail section of Grand Avenue will be built below ground to pass beneath a unique crossing of Glendale and 59th avenues, creating a new gateway in Historic Downtown Glendale.

ADOT and its contractor, Coffman Specialities, have worked with the City of Glendale and downtown merchants to restructure the project schedule to provide the new Glendale Avenue and 59th Avenue intersection in time for the holiday shopping season.

The entire intersection of Grand Avenue, Glendale Avenue and 59th Avenue will be closed starting Monday morning, May 16, to construct the Grand Avenue underpass and the bridge for the future Glendale Avenue and 59th Avenue intersection.

Access to Historic Downtown Glendale will be maintained on local streets. Regional through traffic will be encouraged to use other local cross streets as alternate routes.

It is anticipated that Grand Avenue will be closed between Myrtle Avenue and 56th Avenue for approximately one year to build the underpass.

Glendale Avenue and 59th Avenue will be closed on each side of the intersection until November while crews build the bridge for the future intersection of Glendale and 59th avenues.

The new bridge will provide a safer, more efficient intersection and provide an enhanced entrance to Historic Downtown Glendale. Special design features to create a park-like setting include colorful brick pavers, landscaping and new transit and pedestrian facilities.
