DISTRIBUTOR DRIVE GEAR FAILURE
The recent
rash of Distributor Drive failures is the result of several different issues. These gears transmit as much as 7 horsepower
and if they are originally mated they are a trouble free component. The problem begins when one or both of the
gears goes bad. I have had limited
success putting new Distributor Gears on used Cam Gears. The only way this has a chance to work is to
paint the distributor gear with Molydisulfide Cam Lobe Lube. Replacing both gears is a lot more work, but
the best way to go. When replacing both
gears consider replacing the timing chain as well. Make sure to check distributor end play, pump gear end play and
block off the Oil Filter Bypass in the filter housing.
