How to use the Passive.

The passive is very common in English. It is often used to describe processes like how things are made, and in news reports.

Passive sentences are used when we are more interested in the action than in what or who did the action e.g.,

A gun was fired.

Grapes are grown in France.

The passive is used when:

1. The person performing the verb is NOT important to the meaning e.g.,

2. You do not know who does something e.g.,

3. The action is done by many people or no-one e.g.,

4. There is a very good reason for NOT saying who did the action e.g.,

5. The thing or the person which is the subject of the action is placed at the start e.g.,
