Here are the words for the stages in our lives, for some things
connected to romance, and for different relationships with other people. There
are also some questions and answers we use to discuss relationships.

We have different stages in our life. Which stage are you in?
Here are the main stages which we go through.

2. Romance.

get married.
After the marriage couples
go on honeymoon.
The couple
have children.
They might
get divorced.
If you have a romance with someone who is already married, you
have an affair.
3. Relationships and status.
Here are the types of relationships people have and different
ways of talking about people's status. How do you talk about yourself?
If someone is
single,
they are not married.
If someone is your
ex,
you did have a relationship with them but you do not anymore e.g.,
ex-girlfriend.
If you have a
boyfriend / girlfriend,
you have a romance with them.
If two people are
engaged,
they are going to get married soon.
If someone is
married,
they have a husband or wife.
If two people are
a couple,
they are together and may or may not be married.
If you have
a
partner, you live with someone but are not
married to them.
We all have
best friends.
We also have our own
group of friends.
If married people split up, they first
get separated
and then they get divorced.
If your husband or wife is dead, you are
widowed.
4. Talking about people and their relationships.
Here are some useful ways of talking and asking about people's
relationships with each other.
Are you going out with anyone? No, not at the moment.
Who is she going out with? With Alan.
Is he married? No, he's divorced.
Who were you talking to yesterday? That was my ex.
I am going out with my best friend tonight.
How old is Jane? She's still a toddler.
We are getting engaged! Congratulations.

Alan and Joanne's Romance.
Alan met Joanne in 1995 at a party. They
immediately got on quite well and Alan asked Jane out for
dinner the following Friday. They had a great time and went dancing afterwards.
Jane and Alan started to go out with each other regularly. They fell in love. After dating for two years Alan proposed
to Joanne and she accepted, they got married in July 1997. It
was a large wedding immediately followed by a honeymoon in
California. They now had three children all girls. Things did not work out
between them, however. In 2002 Joanne divorced Alan when she
found out he was having an affair with a woman he worked with.
