A man's head which is believed to be that of a fisherman who had fallen overboard from a fishing boat in California two days ago was yesterday discovered inside the stomach of a giant fish. The 106lb cod was caught by fishermen off the coast of San Diego not long after Steven Hughs, 23, had disappeared from his fishing boat 15 miles off the coast on Sunday. Cod can grow up to 9 feet long. The huge fish was sent to a processing plant called 'Montagues' in San Diego so that it could be prepared for the market. However when the 6ft long fish was cut open, the astonished workers found the man's head. Paul Church, who owns Montague's, reported: "The workers could not believe what they saw. Everyone was very shocked. No-one could ever believe that something like this was possible."The police were called to the plant and they have taken the whole fish away. Forensic tests are to be carried out on the head in order to establish the identity. Another question which interests police is how the head became detached from the body and it was hoped that scientists would be able to find out. Another unusual thing about this story is that this type of fish does not have sharp teeth and eats by sucking in its food not biting it.
