The articles أدوات النكرة و المعرفة a . an . the How to use the articles. A , an, and the are called articles. These are the most common words in English. The three most common problems with the use of articles are listed at the bottom.
The uses of a and an.1. a is used for nouns which do not start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u), e.g.,قبل الاسم المبدوء بحرف ساكن و الذي لا يبدا بحرف متحرك a نستخدم اداة النكرةa car, a computer, a town
2. an is used for nouns which start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u) e.g.,قبل الاسم المبدوء بحرف متحرك an نستخدم اداة النكرة
an egg, an orange, an apple, an umbrella, an ashtray
3. a or an are used with singular count nouns e.g.,قبل الاسماء المفردة a / an نستخدم اداتا النكرة
a bag, an ashtray, a river
4. a or an are used when we talk about something for the 1st time e.g., عند التحدث عن شئ لأول مرة a / an نستخدم اداتا النكرةThere is a park (1st) in Shrewsbury. The park (2nd) is beautiful.
5. a or an are used with indefinite meaning "I don't care which one" e.g., عند التحدث عن شئ غير محدد المعني اي انا لا اهتم بما هو الشئ a / an نستخدم اداتا النكرةCould you lend me a book to read, please?
The uses of the. the استخدام1. The is used with all singular or plural nouns e.g.,قبل الاسم المفرد و الجمع the نستخدام the man, the woman, the book;the men, the women, the books.
2. The is used for specific reference e.g., للاشارة الي شئ معين the نستخدام I looked and saw a car (1st mention). The car crashed (now you know which car).
3. The is used for things which are unique - there is only 1 of them in the world e.g.,
The Pope lives in Rome.The moon is bright tonight.
4. The is NOT used with nouns when you talk in general about things e.g.,Computers are useful. Life is hard. Beer is expensive.
The 3 main problems with articles. 1. Always use singular countable nouns with an article e.g.,a tree or the tree NOT tree.
2. If you talk about things in general we use the plural form of the noun. Never use the. e.g., Computers are fun. NOT The computers are fun.
3. When you talk about people's jobs always use a or an e.g., She's a housewife. NOT She's housewife. |
