The
Christmas Wall
On
December 24th I was sitting in my basement at a table having a cigarette
with my coffee staring at the cement wall in front of me. As I stared at
the wall I saw something that looked like a closed eye -- I thought, “how
strange” – and then I saw a nose – the image kept coming clearer. I thought
the image looked like Christ. When I left the basement I thought the image
wouldn’t be there when I returned. I didn’t think too much about it nor
did I tell anyone, not even Moe. I spent the whole day not thinking about
it but later that evening I returned and I looked again at the wall and
the image was still there. I thought, “I must trace what I’m seeing if
the image is still there tomorrow” but still not telling anyone about it.
When
I awoke the next morning (December 25th) I got my coffee and went to the
basement just as I have been doing since we have lived here to have my
coffee and cigarette. I looked at the wall and saw that the image was still
there. I thought, “ I must trace this image”. I started to think whether
I should use a pen or pencil and decided to use a pencil because most sketches
are done in pencil. I went upstairs to Moe’s desk and found a pencil. Moe
was having his coffee and reading the newspaper. I went back to the basement
and began to trace what I saw but I had to stand on my tiptoes because
the image was high up on the wall. It took me about 5 minutes to trace
and when I was finished I stood back and looked and it was just what I
thought. It was the image of Christ.
I
went upstairs and asked Moe to come down stairs because I wanted him to
see something, but still not saying anything about what I had done. When
we got to the basement we went to the table and I asked him to look at
the wall and tell me what he saw. He looked at the wall and, in utter amazement;
“it looks like Christ as he appeared when he was kneeling in the Garden
prior to His death on the cross”. It was then that I finally told him the
complete story as I have written it.
Neither
Moe nor I have absolutely any artistic ability for sketching and would
be lucky to draw a straight line with a ruler. I merely let the pencil
follow the image as I saw it on the blank wall. It’s still there, but I
couldn’t duplicate it anywhere else if I tried.
Moe
took the film to be developed and when he returned to pick-up the pictures
the young man who developed the film ask him about that particular picture
and Moe asked the young man what he thought he saw. The young man replied
“it’s obviously a sketch of Christ on a sidewalk or a cement wall”. When
Moe told him the complete story he was so moved that he asked if he could
make a copy of it for himself.
I
cannot explain this incident but we both feel that God has sent us a message
of hope at a time of tribulation in our life and has revitalized our faith
in Him. I felt that I had to share this with our families so that you would
pray for us to pass through this trying period in our life.
