Official maps of the New Mexico State Highway Department

The Mid-Century: 1956 - 1973

Through 1958, the official state highway map was issued solely by the State Highway Department. Starting in 1959, the Department of Development jointly issued the maps with the State Highway Department.

After 1957, dating the maps gets a bit more difficult. The 1958 map is not dated at all, except for population estimates. The 1961 map comes in two varieties - one with the code "461" (indicating April 1961) in the lower left corner of the map, and one with "461-8" (probably indicating an August revision). The 1962 map contains the code "862" (August 1962). The 1964 map contains the code "1064" (October 1964). An argument could be made that this map was actually issued for the year 1965, although it was produced in late 1964. Similarly, the 1962 map may well have been produced for distribution in 1963, and the second variety of the 1961 map for 1962.

In 1967, dates started appearing again on the map inside, in addition to the code. There are two varieties of the 1968 map, one with the map date, and one without. Both have a code of "268". The 1969 map is dated on the map inside, but also has a "268" code. It is printed on different paper stock from the 1968 map, but is otherwise the same. The 1970 and '71 maps are again dated inside on the map, as is the 1973, although it has a 1972 copyright.
