Current Projects
Shiki: Free Improvisation
Tsuyoshi Honjo, alto saxophone
Michael McNeill, piano
Gabriel Solomon, violin
Honjo, McNeill, and Solomon have each tackled major solo works by (respectively) Luciano Berio and Christian Lauba, Ralph Shapey and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Alban Berg and Mario Davidovsky, and have performed together in various chamber and jazz settings. Their trio project blends their experiences performing 20th-century music with their instincts and intuition into dynamic free improvisation. Click here for the samples page.
Michael McNeill Trio
Michael McNeill, piano
Ken Filiano, bass
Phil Haynes, drums & percussion
A "classic" jazz piano trio, drawing not only on the trio music of Chick Corea and Richie Beirach, but also expanding on the modern horn-trio concepts of Anthony Braxton, Paul Smoker, and Henry Threadgill. Featuring master improvisers Ken Filiano and Phil Haynes, accomplished leaders in their own rights and veterans of performances and recordings with Anthony Braxton, Ellery Eskelin, Dave Liebman, Tony Malaby, Herb Robertson, Paul Smoker, and many others. Audio samples at MySpace.
Flier for the August 5, 2007 performance
