Our Day at the State Meet This will probably get moved to the story section later on, but it's right her, for now... So as usual, this year's state meet was a complete surprise to everybody who was there, but it wasn't exactly the races that made this day what it was. After taking a rank-smelling Greyhound 4 hours to meet up with DK in Springifled, we were off to Peoria. Having learned that we would actually be able to sleep in a hotel, i was looking forward to a good noghts sleep an a shower to wash the stink of the Greyhound off myself. We finally got to Peoria after about a 1.5 hour drive, and found the hotel pretty easily, and who do we see when we get into the lobby...a scantily clad Luke accompanied by a few other DGN thugs, but no one else who was running. He recounted the days occurences including how he got Tim Broe's autograph, and bought a cheap ass uni. Moving on, we decided to go out and try to find Detweiler,,,probably not the best idea. We asked the incompitent lady at the hotel for directions and she gave some vague, semi-accurate directions, and with DK behind the wheel, this is a problem. So after driving onto a sidewalk and through lovely Chainsaw Murder Rd, we decided to give up our search and hit up some Taco Bell. After exacting some revenge for forgetting DK's nachos, it was time to move onto the hotel for a "good night's sleep". We ended up having to share the king size bed, and set aup the great wall in order to prevent any uncomfortable roll over incidences...in short, it was some poor qual sleep. Saturday came after a solid 5 hours of sleep, and we were off to Detweiler, which thanks to T Mac aka the girls' xc coach, we found it fairly easily. We got there just in time to see Katelyn Bastert make a mockery out of the girls' A race, and shortly after the DGN fan bus arrived. We got a game of firzbeye poppin with some ballers from OPRF inculding Lathon, who is as cool as i had heard. Then there was some A boys' race, some Big Ondrovy, and some waiting for the DGN thugs to arrive. Finally they showed up and we greeted them, and got a quick, pre-race analysis. Then we moved onto some more frisbeye. As we were playing we saw a guy in a Viking costume, and couldn't resist. Some random kid was happy to do the dirty work (he faked diving right into the Viking's back) and we happy to watch him make an ass out of himself. The girls' AA race was the most boring, and the DGN girls did not do well at all, but there was a more important race about to go down. Me, DK, Bradley, Fiorino, and the Big Ondrovy himself, staked out a spot in no man's land and got our cheer on, when the DGN Boys passed by. We were happy to see that the boys looked to be in good positon and watched the finish. Huge Suprises that warranted screams: Mohhammed x 2, Durrell in 11th, B Rock 14th! Then we went to congratulate the boys on what we thought was a very high finish. Pretty much all were pleased w/ their performances, and we waited for the results. Turned out Barron was 14th and DGN was a somehwat disappointing 7th, 11 points out of 4th, but everybody ran well so i think the mood was positive. So we were at the awards, and who do we see, but Durell Williams, so I had to shake the Baller of the Week's hand...it was $$$. So after the awards, Dk and I were walking back to his car when who do we see...'03 National Champ and owner of the sweetest kick ever, Matt Withrow! Needless to say, it was the cherry on top of an all together baller day. After forgetting his keys and causing a 20 minute delay, we were off to go back home. Solid Race, Solid Day, Solid Weekend...the '04 IHSA State Meet was in the books. |
