We could never fathom how the car rental business works in Las Vegas. On flying into Las Vegas airport, we thought that it would be a good idea to rent a car. So we approached the information counter at the airport and asked the guy manning the counter on how to go about it. He was most helpful.
"It's cheaper to book by phone. ", he said.
With that he gave us a list of car rental agencies who have business booths operating at the airport(Avis, Hertz etc). It was quite a big list. Not only that, the guy took his phone and placed it in front of me and said I could use it free of charge.
We called up one company by phone and asked for the rental rate for a particular model. After putting down the phone, we walked over to the car rental company's booth at the airport(just a few steps away from the phone) and inquire about the rental rate for the same make and model. Sure enough, the quotation we received over the phone line was about 20 per cent cheaper than that which we obtained from the booth. When we told the the person at the booth that the quotation over the phone was cheaper, she replied that we should get a booking number from the person on the phone and then she would let us have the lower rate. We tried the price comparison with a few other companies operating at the airport and in every case the quotation obtained by phone was lower. Amazing, isn't it! We couldn't figure out how the business works. So if you are planning to rent a car in Las Vegas, you know what to do. Although the savings may not seem much, nevertheless booking by phone is good for a laugh. Most of the car models rent for between US$40 to US$100 a day, not including insurance.
