St. Jude, The Apostle

St. Jude - Day of Feast 28th Oct.

In the gospel of St. Luke we find the name of St. Jude in the list of  Apostles chosen and appointed by our Lord, whereas in the gospels of St. Matthew and St. Mark, we find the name Thaddeus in the place of St. Jude., He was the son of Joseph and Salome (not the Salome from Bethlehem, but another), and brother to James the Lord's Brother. Joseph the Carpenter had four sons by Salome: James, Hosea, Simon and Jude. Jude is often called 'Jude the brother of James', to note his relationship with his brother (Luke. 6:16; Acts 1:13). St Jude begins his Epistle: 'Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James'. Although he could call himself the Lord's brother, just as James did, he did not do so. This was out of humility and out of shame, because he did not believe in Christ the Lord at the very beginning. When the aged Joseph desired to give Jesus His portion of the property before his death, just as he was doing for his other children, all of them were against it, including Jude, and only James voluntarily shared out his portion and laid some aside for Jesus. Jude is also called Levi and Thaddeus. There is another Thaddeus, or Jude, one of the Seventy, but this Thaddeus or Jude was one of the Great Apostles. Though he is consistently listed among the twelve in the gospels, there is no mention of Jude’s calling by Lord Jesus or there is any hint about his occupation, which he held before accepting the discipleship. The only incident of note connected specifically with his name took place at the last supper when Jude asked Lord Jesus why it was that he revealed himself to the disciples and not to
the world, to which Lord replied that He and His Father would visit all those who loved and obeyed him.

After Pentecost little is known of Jude’s activities. Following the apocryphal “ Passion of Simon and Jude” he is traditionally believed to have preached with Simon in Persia, where they were both martyred. Confusion of Thaddeus with Addai has given rise to a tradition that he preached in Mesopotamia. He preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Galilee, Idumea, Syria, Arabia, and Armenia. At Edessa, the city of Abgar, he continued and developed the preaching of the other Thaddeus. While he was preaching in the region around Ararat, he was seized by the pagans, crucified and shot through with arrows, that he might reign forever in the Kingdom of Christ. The relics of Simon and Jude were supposedly translated to St. Peter’s in Rome around eighth century with Rheims and Toulouse also laying claim to
some relics.

St. Jude is best known in modern days as the patron saint of hopeless cases and the faithful publish appeals for help or expressions of gratitude in the local newspapers. This has said to originate from the uncomfortable similarity of Jude’s name to that of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Lord Jesus. There are a few ancient churches dedicated to Saints Simon and Jude, but none for either alone. In art he is generally represented with the club of his martyrdom, occasionally holding his book, and sometimes holding a ship while Simon carries a fish, founded on an assumption that as cousins of Zebedee they too were fishermen.
