In fighting for our freedom, let's remember the liberties we are fighting for. |

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Amendment 1 (1791) U.S. Constitution |

According to "The American Dream" a textbook written by Lew Smith, c. 1977, Scott Foresman and Company, this means that Congress cannot pass laws that make any religion the official religion of the country. It can't make laws that stop people from practicing their own religion. It can't make laws that prevent people from speaking or printing whatever they want (as long as it's not slanderous or seditious). It can't make laws that prevent people from meeting peaceably so that they may ask the government to right any wrong. |
