In promotion of Unfaithful.
"Unfaithful" actor weary of 'Brad Pitt' label"
Here's a short interview where Olivier talks about how he feels about being called the French version of various American stars....
He's been called the French Brad Pitt and he hates it.
Darkly handsome Olivier Martinez, who plays a Frenchman who seduces Diane Lane in "Unfaithful," hardly resembles Pitt. But he says the label was attached to him when it wasn't known how to introduce him to American moviegoers in his first international film, 1995's "Le Hussard Sur Le Toit."
The label stuck. Martinez understands why the studio promoted him that way, but he calls it a cheap cliche.
"We are going to present this guy who we don't know and nobody knows. We can maybe explain to the people that it's Brad Pitt but in French. My first movie they called me the French Matt Dillon, my second the French Tom Cruise. So come on, don't be cheap," Martinez told reporters.
Martinez said his objection isn't a slam on Pitt, Dillon or Cruise because he likes their work. But he'd rather be his own person.
Martinez's independent streak was evident in the making of "Unfaithful," as he declined to appear nude in intense love scenes with Diane Lane.
"I'm never naked in the movie because I don't play naked. Because I'm shy," he said with a laugh. "Sometimes, you know, we are actors but we are also human beings. Different personalities and different behaviors. And I'm an actor who doesn't play naked."
Martinez was more interested in the motivations of the lovers, a single man and a previously happily married woman, than the nudity.
"Why this woman who has almost everything is going to take this big risk to be with this kind of young, immature, charming guy from somewhere else, I think, is because sometimes desire doesn't fit with reality. You can destroy yourself," he said.
