Haratio Seymour School is being torn down!
As a result of ignorance, neglect and lack of interest, this former school is
being torn down. As of May 17th 2002, the demolition has already begun. The reason
its coming down is to make way for a supermarket, though the store hasn't even
been approved yet. This building has been empty for several years now and simply
was not put to use as it should have been. Now we are losing this historic structure
(original part was built in 1923 and named after a great politican from the city).
Below is the article from the Utica Observer-Dispatch printed on May 7th, 2002.
Be sure to read the main write-up on the previous page about Seymour School. I
hope to add more info and I learn it. I will also try to get some pictures of
the demolition.
The one thing I really hope to promote here is historic presevation. Structures
built before WWII have character that cannot be duplicated today. We must do
our part to save these great buildings for future generations.
