Programming Additional SecuriLock Keys
Introduced to the Explorer in 1998, the SecuriLock Passive Anti-theft System (PATS) features specially coded keys that are programmed to start your Explorer. If you attempt to start it with a key that isn't programmed with the correct code, the engine is disabled to prevent theft. Also with this system, it is not possible for a thief to "hot wire" your Explorer. The instructions* below may be used to program additional SecuriLock Keys for your Explorer (you can have up to 8). Please note that you need two correctly coded keys for this procedure. If you only have one, you will need to go to the dealership where they will reset the computer so the minimum of two keys can be programmed.

Procedure to program spare SecuriLock keys to your vehicle
New SecuriLock keys must have the correct mechanical key cut for your vehicle.
Conventional (non-SecuriLock) keys cannot
be programmed to your vehicle. You will need to have two previously programmed
SecuriLock keys and the new unprogrammed
SecuriLock key readily accessible for the procedure. Please read and understand
the entire procedure before you begin.

1. Insert the first previously programmed SecuriLock key into
the ignition switch and turn the ignition from OFF to RUN (maintain
ignition in RUN for at least one second). If the programming procedure was successful, the new SecuriLock key(s)
will start the vehicles engine. The theft indicator (located on
the instrument cluster) will light for three seconds and then go out. |
