Samaki Handicrafts was founded by members of Sivilai Fellowship Church in Nong Khai province, NE Thailand in 1992. The project was started in an effort to provide work for local women, who would otherwise migrate to the cities to work on construction sites, in factories or in brothels. Although this is a church based project, it is open to anyone and in fact the majority of the workers are not Christians. A committee oversees the project and is made up of representatives of the church, the weavers and the seamstresses. The project is run on a day to day basis by a manager, who is also responsible for design, quality control and marketing. As well as providing poor women with fairly paid work in their own community, the project sees the importance of preserving traditional skills and handicrafts. Most of the weavers are older women who weave at home whilst looking after grandchildren. It is this beautiful traditional mutmee cloth that the Samaki seamstresses use to make the finished products. |
