Profiles Stuff

I've been playing with Designfoil-Snack (demo version), and tried to get some knowledge from the polar plots, and lift, drag, and moment coefficients. I have to say I'm only an Electronics Engineer, and my aerodynamic analysis skills are minimal. I just fly power kites and read as much as I can on the internet, specially at the extraordinary FOILDESIGN and LEPROFIL mail lists. My final intention is to rate them in order to chose the best kitesurfing sled kite profile.

So far, I studied six profiles. Four of them are very known profiles (Clark-Y, Clark-YH, MH92, and Eliminator kite profile), and the other two come from the Dribbler kite (DA2 airfoil, from David Aberdeen), and from the Ikaros kite (from Stelios Alexandrakis). By the way, they don't know yet I grabbed their designs for my purposes...

These are the profiles:

Clark-Y and Clark-YH are two very popular airfoils, I wanted to know why...

The MH92 airfoil has some "reflex". I wanted to study its behavior.

Last, the Eliminator, just because I made one of those kites...

Once I got the airfoils I took away their lower side, and adjusted all of them to 10% max. height relative to chord. Then I attached a 10% diameter LE bladder.

Now they look like this:

And the last two:

Now let's see the polar plots: Page two
