Syriac / Aramaic

Introduction to the Syriac language

Shlomo! This section is here to provide you with an introduction to the Syriac language.

What is Syriac? Syriac refers to the Aramaic language spoken in the Near East for over 2000 years. It was the language spoken by Christ, and is the mother language of Hebrew (a dialect of Aramaic) and Arabic. Historically, Syria is a synonym for Aram. Nowadays, a Syriac person refers to the original inhabitants of Beth-Nahreen (Mesopotamia). These groups include the Akkadians, Arameans, Assyrians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, and Phonecians.

The following lessons will give you a brief introduction to the language spoken by Christ and His disciples.
