9.2 SPACE – Practical Work

  1. Pendulum – Active Physics p72
    1. Show that period of motion is independent of mass or amplitude
    2. Vary length and plot l against T2
    3. Find gradient and determine g from  T = 2pÖ( l/g)

  1. Projectile Motion – Active Physics p39
    1. Roll ball off desktop and bounce ball at an angle to go from floor level to floor level
    2. Video the two motions
    3. Replay the video and record images on a OHT sheet using the frame advance
    4. Photocopy OHT
    5. Use photocopy to determine

·  Horizontal range

·  Horizontal velocity

·  Vertical velocity just before striking the ground

·  Instantaneous velocity just before striking the ground

·        By using Pythagoras and

·        By using direct measurement

  1. Centripetal Force – Active Physics p72
    1. Spin rubber stopper and counter balance it with various masses
    2. Determine force (F) and angular velocity (w)
    3. Plot F against w2
    4. Determine the mass of stopper from F = mrw2
    5. Compare to actual mass
    6. Vary radius of orbit and relate v to r
    7. Cut lower string and describe the motion of the stopper – relate to a satellite without gravitational force

  1. Heat on Materials
    1. Compare heat transmitted through various materials
    2. Place flat plate of each material under a beaker of water
    3. Heat the plate from underneath using a Bunsen
    4. Record and graph temperature variations over time
    5. Compare materials

  1. Michelson-Morley Model
    1. Rolling Balls & fans – forget it!!!
