Preliminary ASSESSMENT

FACULTY:

Science

SUBJECT:

Physics

Task:

Practical Reports

Weighting:

10% from each unit contributing to 40% of the total assessment.

Date / Timing:

Handed in on the day of the task

Module / Unit

Each Unit

Outcomes:

P11, P12, P13, P14, P15

Task Description:

These practical reports are submitted following the practical investigation. They will involve collection and interpretation of data.

Resources / Materials:

Textbook, Library, internet, Practical equipment.

Marking Guidelines:

Better answers will:

-         have a clearly defined AIM which sets out the purpose of the investigation

-         have a METHOD which includes

o       a clearly labelled diagram drawn using a pencil and a ruler

o       an easy to follow procedure

-         have RESULTS which come from careful observation and/or measurement and may include original data and derived data, including correct units, in a properly ruled table

-         have an ANALYSIS which may include a well drawn and properly labelled graph along with well set out calculations

-         have a CONCLUSION which

o       clearly answers the aim

o       outlines possible sources of error

o       suggests practical modifications and/or further investigations

Average answers will:

-         have an AIM which sets out the purpose of the investigation

-         have a METHOD which includes

o       a diagram

o       a procedure

-         have RESULTS which come from observation and/or measurement and may include original data and derived data in a table

-         have an ANALYSIS which may include a graph along with some calculations

-         have a CONCLUSION which

o       almost answers the aim

o       outlines some possible sources of error or suggests some modifications or further investigations

Poor answers will:

-         have a poorly defined AIM

-         have a METHOD which includes

o       a poorly labelled diagram or no diagram at all

o       a procedure which is difficult to follow

-         have RESULTS in a poorly constructed table or no table at all

-         have an ANALYSIS which may include a poorly constructed graph or no graph at all, along with poorly set out calculations

-         have a CONCLUSION which

o       misinterprets the results and does not answer the aim
