Welcome...

To my Mexico homepage. I intend to offer you lots of free content as well as sources that you can use to aid you in your expatriation adventure to our neighbors South of the Border. I will concentrate on Learning Spanish since this is the Portal to the culture. You have to learn the language if you are to have any hope for getting along well in The Land of Fiestas.

I also will provide the reader with ample resources that I hope will make their transition to The Highlands a little easier.

This site will deal primarily with specific expat issues and resources for Central Mexico.

Enjoy!

PREVIOUS WORKS REVIEWED:

A previous book review:

But the Bowers' book has that ring of authenticity and is squarely aimed at the (for lack of a better clich) "average Joe" who is looking for a life that is different and/or better and needs down-to-earth practical advice on how an American can make this transition."

Bruce Drake
Former Vice President for News and Information with National Public Radio (NPR)

Two article reviews:

I just read your article on living in Mexico titled Expat or Fakepat. I applaud you. This is the kind of advise I have been writing to authors who I think have given a less than accurate account of living in Mexico. I have spent my entire career launching fortune 100 companies through out Latin America this is the first time I have read something which was unvarnished and straightforward about living in Latin America.

I am a Canadian expat living in Culiacn, Sinaloa. My wife and son are natural Mexicans. I read your article about Fakepats in the Escape from America Magazine. I totally agree your comments on the ignorant nature of many of the foreigners (us Canadians included) who come here expecting to find a Fantasy Island welcoming party. I don't want to infer that adapting to life here is easy or should be; a really humble effort has to be made to assimilate into Mexico's enduring culture.

LEARN SPANISH NOW!

Learning Spanish Like Crazy LEVEL ONE: A winning combination when used in conjunction with Pimsleur Spanish Home Study Course.

Learning Spanish Like Crazy LEVEL TWO: This course may be the most effective way to learn the subjunctive mood. LSLC Nivel Dos uses a fun and easy method to teach the subjunctive mood (unlike the effective, but tedious method used in FSI Programmatic Spanish Two to teach the subjunctive mood). Arguably, Learning Spanish Like Crazy Nivel Dos is the best course available for learning the subjunctive mood.

I also found that Nivel Dos did the best job of any course that I have reviewed so far when it comes to teaching commands. Although there are a couple of excellent courses on the market that do a good job teaching verb conjugation, I found that Nivel Dos did the most complete job of teaching commands. And without mastering "commands," you can never truly be fluent in any language.

The bonus DVD was also excellent. The instructor on the bonus DVD has a unique teaching method that I found both fun and interactive.

ABOUT THE BOOK AND ITS NEED: To sum it up as concisely as possible, more than 99% of the American Gringos who move to Mexican do so based on Mexico as a Concept and not Mexico as a Reality. My book attacks and dispels the false and infatuated concept potential American Expats have about Mexico and will instills a reality based picture of what life as an American Gringo in Mexico is actually like. My book presents the reality of what life is like in Mexico for the American thinking about moving to here for whatever reason. No REALITY BASED how-to guide exists for moving to towns in Central Mexicoan experience vastly different from moving to and living in the traditional gringo enclaves of Puerto Vallarta, San Miguel de Allende, and others. My book provides a guide NOT to Mexico as a Concept but to Mexico as a Reality.

I must receive hundreds of emails each year, from readers of my thousands of articles and several books, asking me how to find a place to live in Guanajuato. In recent years, the capital city of the state of Guanajuato, that bears the same name--Guanajuato--is now officially on the Gringo Radar. They are coming in droves and all those Gringos need a place to live. This book, I hope, provides a start to what you will be up against in Guanajuato, Gto., Mexico! I provided lots of advice as well as resources to get you started looking or a place to live. Not only is this a small primer on how-to find a place to live but is a primer dealing with a philosophy of expatriation.
