Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s government recently added the Israel Beiteinu party to its coalition and made its Chairman, Avigdor Lieberman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategic Affairs.

Lieberman goes beyond merely opposing the creation of a Palestinian state in the occupied territories to calling for the cleansing of Israel of its Palestinian citizens. During the recent elections, he said, "The problem with the Arabs inside Israel must come before the Palestinian problem. Once the state is more homogeneous, it will develop faster."

In 2003, Lieberman called for thousands of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel to be drowned in the Dead Sea and offered to provide the buses to take them there. More recently, he called for the execution of Arab members of the Israeli Parliament who met with members of the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority.

Despite Lieberman’s long history of racism and support for ethnic cleansing, the Brookings Institution’s Saban Center for Middle East Policy has invited Lieberman to speak at a forum on the future of the Middle East on December 8. The panel he is speaking on will follow an address by former President Bill Clinton and precede one by Senator Hillary Clinton. The panel was initially supposed to be chaired by Henry Kissinger, but even Kissinger will not to appear alongside Lieberman. We wish the same could be said of the Clintons who claim they stand against racism and are for a peaceful and just resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Finally, we wonder why the Brookings Institution would not only invite someone who campaigns for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians but also be "honored" by his presence (according to a released statement).

WE DEMAND:

- The Brookings Institution revoke Liebermman’s invitation and issue an apology for inviting him.

- Bill and Hillary Clinton speak up on thiis issue, condemn Lieberman’s views, and refuse to appear alongside someone who espouses ethnic cleansing.
